This coffee comes from Huehuetenango, Guatemala, produced exclusively by female farmers through Volcafe’s La Morena project. Huehuetenango is the highest and driest of Guatemala’s three non volcanic regions making it one of the best. However, quality isn’t the only reason we wanted to buy this coffee. Gender disparity is a big problem in the coffee industry globally, Guatemala is no exception with 70 percent of the labour force being female but only 20-30 percent of those operating farms.
Projects like La Morena are vital in empowering women by supporting them in setting up small businesses, giving them access to agronomists, showcasing their work to the local community and allowing them opportunities to progress in their careers. The project has grown from starting in 2015 with only twenty-two farmers and producing only one 30 bag lot to now ninety-three farmers who this year yielded an astounding 2900 bags. We’re really impressed with this blend of Bourbon, Catuai and Caturra, which for us has the classic characteristics of a beautiful washed Guatemalan and are excited to highlight a great coffee and an important initiative.
This lot was fully washed and sun dried on raised beds. We’re really happy that we’re supporting a great project and have a wonderful coffee to share!
